History of Tile

Clay tiles came first. Originating approximately 10,000 B.C., clay roofing tile production, however limited, has been traced to two distinct and independent regions, Neolithic China and the Middle East. Those tiles produced in China are believed to be the predecessor of the two. These tiles served purely a functional purpose, which even today remains twofold: reducing fire probability and shedding water. As tile became more prevalent, and architecture more important, tiles with ornamental designs and even some made of marble were employed.
